10.5 in x 14 in

graphite on 300 lb./640 gsm 100% cotton paper

In this graphite piece, the nest of the Acadian Flycatcher, Empidonax virescens, is depicted among the forked branches of a North American beech tree.

The female Acadian Flycatcher will choose her site on the bowing branches of a large shrub or tree. The somewhat pendulous nest will often droop between diverging branches. She will ardently wrap the sinewy silk of a spider’s web around the branches while braiding in fine twigs and grasses. She prefers a chandelier of plant material to cascade from the underside of the nest, aiding in its crypsis.
